Scotland, to many the spiritual home of all things game fishing, with world class Atlantic Salmon, trout and of course Grayling.
The quality of salmon fishing is renowned throughout the world, with thousands of anglers returning each year to do battle with this species. The Atlantic Salmon some will say is the ultimate angling challenge (?????????) and here in Scotland is without doubt the best place some will say in the world to catch this King of Fish. The best know rivers are the Dee, Spey, Tay and Tweed, that provide a quality of fishing that make the adrenalin flow. The Dee in Aberdeenshire is simply the greatest spring Atlantic Salmon river in the world, though the Tweed now produces more Atlntic Salmon than any other river with one of the longest seasons, running form 1st February to 30th November.
There are many Salmon rivers and lochs throughout Scotland where the price of a days Salmon fishing is surprisingly low, yet there is every chance of excellent sport. Obviously for the top beats on the top rivers the prices are high. it has to be remembered though that these are some of the best rivers in the world and offer a quality of service the is second to none.
The season for the Salmon varies across Scotland, and it is possible to fish somewhere from 11th January to the 30th November each year. Remember though due to conservation no Salmon fishing is alllowed on a Sunday.
Let us introduce you to what is Scotlands best kept fishing secret (but don't tell anyone) Wild Brown Trout fishing. Whether you prefer rivers or lochs, this type of sport is to put it simply world calss. If you want to get away from it all and off the beaten track then Scotlands remote lochs are packed with incredibly hard fighting wild bown trout and best of all you might just have the place to yourself. In fact many experts say that pound for pound they are the harest fighting brown trout in the world. And this quality of fishing can be had for as little as free, with a common price of around of £5 per day.
If you are into river fishing, they are many rivers around the country that attract anglers from all over the world for classic Fly fishing, with some seriously large trout to be had. Scotland provides a very large number of high quality rivers and streams that provide fishing for all levels of skill.
The season runs from 15th March to the 6th October inclusive. At this point and during the winter months many anglers then turn their attention to the fantastic Grayling, the Lady of the river. Even though the quality of fishing is extremely high, the rivers are surprisingly quiet with many miles of undisturbed water. And if you combine this with yet again low permit costs you have a perfect excuse if you need one for an out of season break.
Now lets us not forget the Rainbow trout. Whilst not being native to Scotland is the most popular game fish with anglers. Not in rivers so it is a visit to some lochs or Fisheries.
There is no close season for Rainbows so weatehr permiting it can be 52 weeks a year. Some tremendous top quality fishing can be found at the commercial Fisheries every month of the year through out the country. The Fisheries range from small specialist ponds to large lochs where skill, experience and a very healthly dose of luck is the recipe for success. Again the quality of the Rainbow trout is recognised and attracts anglers from all over the world.
